The cape cod style homes were a common home in the early 17th of new england colonists these homes featured a simple rectangular shape commonly used by colonists.

Colonial style roof. Colonial house roofs were clay tile earth or wood. The colonial style dating back to 1876 is one of the most popular home styles in the united states. The shape of the roof is said to mimic the slant lid storage box that colonists used for salt a common mineral used to preserve food in colonial new england. Colonial homes were influenced by the history and architecture of the colonists home countries and many of them were from europe.

The house shown here the daggett farmhouse was built in connecticut in the 1760s. The style moniker comes from the relatively unornamented undulating skin of wood shingles on walls and roof sometimes combined with rusticated stone or brick. Although colonial style homes are fairly understated some do have columns a detail that has its origins in greek and roman architecture and can be found in many of the grand buildings of europe. Below we showcase a series of different colonial houses mostly the saltbox style which stems from the british colonial style.

A gable roof is placed at the top of a hip roof for more space and enhanced aesthetic appeal. The shingle style 1875 1910 was developed at first by new england architects who d studied remaining colonial era dwellings and were aware of similar historical trends in england. Some have a gambrel roof which look like barn roofs. Many colonists emigrated from europe and brought those influences with them.

A dutch gable is a hybrid of a gable and hip roof. Within the us different colonial styles of homes were built in different regions including saltbox cape cod georgian and southern colonial houses. Others use a sloping angled roof or flat roofs. Colonial style homes usually have two or three stories fireplaces and brick or wood facades.

The advantage of this design is that the clipped ends to reduce potential wind damage to the home making the roof more stable. The classic colonial style house floor plan has the kitchen and family room on the first floor and the bedrooms on the second floor. This design is often seen in colonial style houses. Some styles have a saltbox shaped roof.

While most are historic the second example is a new house built in the colonial style.
